" Linear Indications in Seams of ASTM A500 Grade B Tube Steel" This is Detroit Edison's final report concerning linear indications in the seams of ASTM A500 Grade B tube steel.

Item 113 was originally reported as a potential deficiency on January 23, 1984, and was subsequently documented in Reference (2).

Description of Deficiency During a support fabrication inspection by Detroit Edison's Project Quality Assurance personnel, linear indications were discovered in ASTM Grade B (2"x2"xl/4") tube steel (lleat No. All 714 ) which was supplied by U.S.

Steel Co.

Similar indications were found in approximately 60 linear feet of the 200 feet ordered.

The cracks in the tube steel were at the seam weld.

Field Engineering determined that linear indications were due to a lack of fusion during the welding process.

The tube still is used in the fabrication of cable tray hangers and conduit supports.

Analysis of Safety Implications The presence of this deficiency in the tube steel material affects the continuity of the tube steel member at the seam.

The design properties of the tube steel member are altered and the structures utilizing tnis material may be over-stressed.

o ' Supports fabr'icated'from the affected tube steel have been identified and are-being replaced.

o Deficient tube steel that has'not been installed was segregated from acceptable _ tube steel in the fabrication-shop.

o Receipt inspection of tube steel' requires a visual inspection of the seam welds.
