Subject:

Byron Generating Station Unit 1 Plant Ef fluent Sampling-NRC Docket No. 50-454

Dear'Mr. Denton:

This letter is to inform you of our schedule for resolving concerns regarding the provisions for sampling of gaseous radioiodine at Byron 1.

We' understand that the operating license will include a condition requiring resolution of this issue.

The NRC Staff has brought to our attention the results of recent research into the deposition of airborne radiciodine on metal surfaces.

Preliminary review indicates that the Byron /Braidwood 1/4" diameter high range sample line may not provide a representative sample under all circumstances and larger sample lines may be necessary.

Replacement of the isokinetic probe and sample line on Byron 1 would probably not be completed until the first refueling outage.

We will continue to pursue prompt resolution of this matter with the NRC Staff.

Any modifications will also be completed as quickly as practicable.

In the interim, however, we believe that the Byron 1 operating license should be conditioned to require complete resolution of this particular aspect of the NUREG-0737 requirement for representative sampling of high-range radiciodine in gaseous effluent stream prior to startup following the first refueling outage.

Please contact this office if any more information is needed.

4 One signed original and fifteen copies of this letter are provided for NRC review.

Very truly yours, DO O
