Harold D. Pontious, Jr. (Comed) letter to the USNRC Document i

Control Desk, Extension of the U-1 First Ten Year Inspection Interval for the Inservice Testing Program, dated July 5,1995.

2.

NUREG 1482, Guidelines for Inservice Testing at Nuclear Power Plants, section 3.3.2 (Concurrent Intervals).

The purpose of this letter is to request approval to establish concurrent intervals for Byron's U 1 and U-2 Ten Year Inservice Testing Interval, beginning July 1,1996 and ending June 30, 2006.

The U 1 commercial service data was September 16,1985 and the U-2 commercial service date was August 21.1987. The second interval date for U-1 has been established for July 1, 1996 per reference (1). Moving the U-2 second interval start date to July 1,1996, however is not allowed by 10 CFR50.55a thus we request aa alternative under 10 CFR50.55a (a)(3)(i). Byron would be required to update to a newer edition of the code by August 21, 1997 per reference (2) unless this alternative to 10CFR50.55a is approved by the NRC.

Per paragraph 10 CFR50.55a(f)(4)(iv), it is allowable to include U-2 with U-1, in updating to the 1989 Edition of the code on July 1,1996 (subject to Commission approval).

NRC approval for concurrent intervals is requested for Byron's U-1 and U-2 2nd Ten Year Inservice Testing Interval, beginning on July 1,1996 and ending on June 30,2006. Byron respectfully requests a response by March 1,1996, prior to the beginning of the 2nd interval.
