Dear Sir:

Three Mile Island Nuclear Station, Unit 1 (TMI-1)

Operating License No. DPR-50 Docket No. 50-289 Environmental Qualification Issues (Condensate Valves /EFW Converters)

In response to your letter of June 25, 1984, GPUN intends to revise its environmental qualification program to include the condensate storage tank valves to the condenser hotwell (C0-V14A/B) and the condensate storage tank cross connect valves (C0-V111A/B). C0-V14A/B have Limitorque motor operator ;

with Reliance motors (Class B insulation). This is similar to that of the emergency feedwater header suction and discharge valves EF-VIA/B and EF-V2A/B. C0-V111A/B currently have Limitorque motor operators with Peerless motors. GPUN intends to replace these Peerless motors with Reliance motors (Class B insulat.'on). With the Reliance motors installed in this manner, C0-Villa /B will also be similar as tested to EF-VIA/B and EF-V2A/B. This replacement was discussed with Limitorque who responded by letter to GPUN stating that the installation of the Reliance motor would not affect the operator's qualification.

The qualification documentation for C0-V14A/B and C0-Villa /B motor operators is currently under development, and is expected to be completed in August 1984. The cable for C0-V14A/B and C0-V111A/B is Kerite, which is qualified and has been reviewed by NRC staff. As noted in GPUN transmittals of August 23, 1983 and May 10, 1983, the power supply for C0-V111A/B and the cable

, routing for C0-V14A/B are being upgraded to seismic during the Cycle 6 I refueling outage.

.s Mr. J. F. Stolz 5211-84-2176 Concerning a separate Environmental Qualification issue, GPUN stated in our letter of May 10, 1984 (5211-84-2114) in Enclosure 2, Attachment I that the E/P converters for EF-V30A/B would be replaced by I/P converters model GT25CA1826. .The I/P converters which were installed are model GT45CA1826.

The converters tested were model T25CD1826 (See ITT Grinnell Report 3419 dated 10/15/82 and Bailey Controls HELB report dated 6/14/84). By letter dated April 25, 1984 (106-03) Conoflow certified the applicability of that test report to the model GT45CA1826 I/P converters. GPUN has verified that the similarity needed for qualification of the installed I/P converters for EF-V30A/B has been established.

Sincerely, e
