Dear Mrs. Ellis:

Pursuant to our recent telephone conversation, I am transnitting additional information in response to your previous discovery requests concerning Applicants' motions for surmry disposition. Also, I.an enclosing pertinent documentation regarding these requests except for the sample of calculations concerning the A500 Steel pleading. We are gathering that caterial in accordance with the criteria you provided.

This =aterial will be provided early next week.

Applicants' responses to your requests are, as follows:

1.

A500 Steel. We will provide shortly a sample of calculations in accordance with the criteria you provided.

2.

AWS v. ASME.

It is Applicants' practice to use level B

,a.

allowables for Level C loads. There is no separate guideline or specification which calls this out.

Examples of this practice are included in many of the calculations provided to CASE in response to requests for documents relating to the Cygna Report.

b. Applicants' practice regarding the calculation of effective throats for skewed T-joints is reflected in the attached pages from the PSE and ITT Guidelines.

No separate provision regarding this practice is set forth in NPSI guidelines.

Further, Applicants' practice in this regard was described in our most recent letter to the NRC Staff, which included a review of 0

3.

Friction. The factor of safety applicable to Hilti bolt design at Comanche Peak is 5 to 1.

The portion of the PSE Guideline to which you referred as using a factor of safety of 4 to 1 is simply a letter providing the load capacity data sheets from 1.ilti.

As you are aware,. Applicants' design practice is premised on a 5 to 1 safety factor, as set forth in Section 5 of the PSE Hanual.

4.

U-Bolts As Two-Way Restraints. The question you posed regarding the use of allowables for U-bolts as two-way restraints was already answered by Dr. Iotti at pages 21-23 of the June 11 conference call.

Sincerely, Ly ujwG,. l T1 i
