Dear Mr. Denton:

Reference.(a) informed you of our intent to utilize. ASME

/ Code Case-N-340 at our Byron and Braidwood generating stations and re' quested acknowledgement of its acceptability.

This code case, iwhich was approved by ASME on June-17, 1982,. provides alternate rules for examination of weld-eoge preparation and ultrasonic examination

.of-a completed weld.

Reference (b) Informed us that the code case was not acceptable for generic: use.

It-was indicated however, that codefcase use:would be acceptable if the reason.for not performing 1

o

edge -examinations in accordance with the' Code and justificaticn for L

applying the Code Case was explained.

The purpose of this-letter is L

toLsupplement our prior request for NRC acknowledgement of_ Code Case j

! acceptability with-the required information.

g I

Braidwood Station LUse of the. subject code case is documented on Commonwealth c

, Edison Company NCR-L272.

Four primary loop weld edge preps were not L

liquid penetrant tested prior to welding.

This condition was not C

, observed until approximately 1/2 o f.the weld ' metal. was deposited.

The corrective action required that'all-remaining accessible. surface be: liquid ~ penetrant examined, all partial welds be ultrasonic. tested Efromethe inside, and all finalLwelds be ultrasonically and radiographically examined.

The corrective action exceeded the requirements set.forth by ~ the -sub ject Code Case.

Use of the Code Case eliminated the need for extensive repairs and-the consequent possibility of stainless steel sensitization.
