Final Report of Potential 10CFR50.55(e) Item 137
" Cracks in Tack Welds in Powell Valves" Detroit Edison has completed its investigation of Item 137 and has determined that it is not reportable under 10CFR50.55(e).
This item concerned cracks in tack welds on valves V8-2159 and V8-2160.
Item 137 was originally reported as a potential deficiency on August 16, 1984, and was subsequently documented in reference (2).
Detroit Edison's Field Engineering performed an investigation of Item 137 and determined that valves V8-2159 and V8-2160 may be used as is.
The purpose of the tack welds is to retain keys within keyways.
Inspection of the two affected and four other valves of this configuration by representatives of the valve manufacturer, Wm. Powell Company, has determined that this function was not adversely affected by the presence of the cracks.
The four other valves in question showed no evidence of tack weld cracking.
Therefore, corrective action is not necessary.
