Response to NRC Generic Letter (GL) 95-07, " Pressure Locking and Thermal Binding of Safety-Related Power-operated Gate Valves," dated August 17,1995 This is in response to the GL 95-07 request that licensees notify the NRC by letter within 60 days whether or not they will implement the action (s) requested by the GL.
GPU Nuclear has addmssed previous correspondence from INPO and from the NRC concerning bonnet pressurization and thermal binding of wedge type motor operated gate valves in an internal report dated December 21,1994. In response to GL 95-07, the scope of our review has been expanded to include the other safety-related power-operated gate valves, those that am air-operated or hydraulically operated. To date our review has not discovered any problems where this potential failure mechanism would prevent power-opemted valves in safety-related systems fmm performing their intended design basis function. As requested by the GL, GPU Nuclear intends to implement the action (s) and provide the 180 day response by Febmary 13, 1996.
