Pittsburgh, PA 15205 July 13, 1984 United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission Region I 631 Park Avenue King of Prussia, PA 19406 ATTENTION:

Dr. Thomas E. Murley Administrator

SUBJECT:

Beaver Valley Power Station - Unit No. 2 Docket No. 50-412 IE Bulletin 84-02 Gentlemen:

Beaver Valley Power Station Unit No. 2 (BVPS-2) has reviewed IE Bulletin 84-02, " Failures of General Ele::tric Type HFA Relays in Use in Class 1E Safety Systems," for applicability to BVPS-2.

As a result of BVPS-2's review, no HFA relays were identified as being installed or planned for installation in safety-related systems at BVPS-2.

Item 3 of the bulletin states: "... if your plant does not use or plan to use the nylon or Lexan-type GE HFA relays in the safety-related systems discussed above, a negative response it requested within 120 days of receipt of this bulletin, and no further action is required."

Accord-ingly, B7PS-2 actions with respect to the bulletin are complete.

However, in order to a'equately address the ge neric concerns, as recommended on page 5 of the balletin and in IE Information Notice 84-20, additional reviews are being perfo rmed in order to identify any related potential problems for relays used in Class 1E safety-related circuits.

Thus far, the review has not forand any failures similar to those ex pe ri-enced with the GE HFA relays as identified in the bulletin for the types of relays used at BVPS-2 for Class lE safety-related circuits.

Nor have any reports of similar failures been identified for the types of relays used at.

BVPS-2 in Class lE safety-related circuits to date.

If similar failures s

should occur with other types of relays, these failures will be haadled by the problem report system and correct ive action, if required, will be initiated, s
