. Krimm As i ant Associ Director fice of Natural and Technological Hazards Programs
SUBJECT:
Interim Finding on Callaway Nuclear Power Plant, Fulton, Missouri This i's in response to your memorandum of August 17, 1984, requesting a supplemental interim finding on the adequacy of offsite planning for the Callaway Nuclear Power Plant.
You requested that the finding reflect the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) review of recent changes provided by the State of Missouri.
Based on recent conversations between Robert S. Wilkerson~of my staff and Dave Matthews of your staff, the deadline for the submittal of FEMA's information was extended to September 14, 1984.
As you know, in accordance with 44 CFR 350, FEMA has begun the process of completing an evaluation of the Missouri Radiological Emergency Response Plan site-specific to the Callaway plant and the relevant local plans. On September 4, 1984, we received FEMA Region VII's evaluation of those plans.
The Director of FEMA Region VII has recommended approval of those plans under 44 CFR 350 and judges that there.is reasonable assurance that the plans and preparedness are adequate to protect the public health and safety in the vicinity of Callaway.
Pending a formal finding under 44 CFR 350, tnis con-stitutes FEMA's most recent review and interim finding on offsite planning and preparedness for the State of Missouri and relevant local jurisdictions around the Callaway site.
In the very near future we will distribute the Regional Director's evaluation, past exercise reports, and the Regional Assistance Committee reviews to the Federal Radiological Preparedness Coordinating Committee for review.
After we receive and analyze their comments, we will send you the formal finding.and determination under 44 CFR 350.
We expect this to be in about three months.
