IN VESSEL COOLABILITY AND RETENTION OF A CORE MELT REPORT

Dear Mr. Quay:

Encicsure 1 to this letter is a copy of the DOE-supported Advanced Reactor Severe Accident Program report entitled "In-Vessel Coolability and Retention of a Core Melt" (DOE /IE-10460, July 1995). This report is being transmitted for NRC staff review in sun af the AP600 in-vessel retention (IVR) topic.

Westinghouse would like to meet with the staf f to establish mutual agreement on what specific issues pertaining to IVR and ex-vessel steam explosion remain to be resolved and what specific criteria will be used by the staff in making their determination.

Enclosure 2 contains the Westinghouse response to follow-on questions related to IVR.

Cindy llaag will contact Mike Franovich to arrange the meeting to reach agreement on what actions are necessary for IVR resolution.
