Dear Ihr. Murley:

IE BULLETIN 83-07 REVISED RESPONSE SALEM GENERATING STATION UNITS NO. 1 AND 2 DOCKETS NOS 50-272 AND 50-311 By' letter dated March 14, 1984, we provided a response to'the subj ect bulletin.. In that letter, we indicated that Salem Generating Station had ~ not-received any products sold by ' Ray Miller, Inc.

In fact, we did receive some 304 and 304L stainless steel pipe and fittings from Richmond Engineering Co. (RECO) that had been furnished by Ray Miller, Inc.

The Ray Miller pipe and fittings were used with Salem's CVCS Holdup tanks, Liquid Waste. Monitors tanks and the Evaporator Bottoms tanks.

Because the Ray Miller-Inc. materials were not used in safety-related applications, they~were mistakenly considered outside the scope of the bulletin, and thus, were not identified in our March 14, 1984 letter; In our March 14, 1984 letter, we also committed to several actions to improve our ability to identify fraudulent vendor practices in the future.

One short term commitment was to provide training t o the Ouality Assurance /Ouality Control Receiving group.

This training was to be completed by May 1, 1984; however, due to scope increases and late receipt of supporting information, it is still not complete.

In order to provide valid training, several industry professional societies and organizations were contacted to obtain guidance on identifying fraudulent vendor practices.

Such guidance information was not received within a time frame to support the.May 1, 1984 date.

Additionally, the scope of the potential problem is more critical than originally estimated, 8407020196 840612 a 0 The Energy Peopl4 gDRADOCK05000 D
