Dear Mr. Denton:

I want to infom you that the University has decided to withdraw its application for renewal of License No. E-71, for the UCLA Research Rea:ter, Decket No. 50-142. The attached letter frc= Chancellor Young to Co==issioner Falladino details our reasons.

We vill begin i= mediately to for=ulate plans for: returning the fuel (both fresh and irradiatte) to the DOE; dismantling the reactor structure; decontamination and disposal operations; and the ultinate disposition of the facility (building, etc.). We intend to seek your assistance in formulating these plans and as they are developed we vill subrit a formal Application for termination of license No. R-71, as per 10 CFP 50.62. In the meantime, we vill make no attempt to fix the er.istinC control blade problem, and the reactor vill not operate agtain.

I want to the,nk you and your staff for your assistance and coeperatien durinC the 1e.st five yer.rc. Your approach to our relicensing probless has alwayr been technically very co=petent and highly prefessional.

Very Truly Yours,
