Dear Mr. Russell:
During the August 24,1995 Westinghouse /NRC AP600 senior management meeting the development of a schedule for completing the AP600 design certification review was discussed. Mr. Quay's letter of August 28,1995 requested that Westinghouse and the NRC meet to establish schedules for the 8-10 critical milestones in the areas of computer code validation and verification, probabilistic risk assessment and thermal hydraulic performance that will support completing this activity. The development of schedules for other critical portions of the review would also be accomplished as a part of this task.
There are a large number of interdependent activities that must be accomplished as a part of completing the AP600 design certi6 cation review. Discussions are ongoing in several areas on the details of tasks that must be completed to complete the review. The interrelational logic between these various activities must be established and assembled into the Gnal logic that both the NRC and Westinghouse can agree upon. Establishing dates for completing the individual milestones will follow as both the NRC and Westinghouse consider resource requirements and availability.
Westinghouse estimates that determining and reaching agreement on the task details and logic can be completed by mid to late October,1995. The associated schedule can be completed about a month later.
I will contact Mr. Kenyon to initiate discussions to establish the logic to close out the individual technical areas and how these areas are related.
