Dear Mr. Callan:

I am writing on behalf of Mayor Bruce Todd of the City of Austin, and the other Austin City Council Members, with respect to the South Texas Nuclear Project.

As you know, a

Austin is a 16-percent owner of STP.

Throughout the duration of the long outages of both Units 1 and. 2, we have been concerned not only with the economic impacts of the outages but with the safety issues identified by NRC that led to the shutdowns.

We understand that you have recently authorized the restart of Unit 2 of STP.

Now that both units have been authorized for restart, our concerns have shifted to that of any remaining potential for future shutdowns or forced outages, the increased costs that may yet be associated with augmented NRC activities while the plant remains on the i

Problem Plant List, and with any new or emerging safety issues that, from NRC's perspective, may warrant monitoring by Austin.

We are also interested to know from your perspective how the NRC is handling any remaining whistleblower cases involving STP.

Accordingly, the Mayor and the City Council would be very grateful for the opportunity to have you address these issues before a public meeting of the Austin City Council.

I have recently discussed with Joe Gilliland the possibility that you might be able to attend our May 26th City Council meeting.

If you are unable to meet with us on that date, we would be happy to arrange a mutually agreeable time.

Thank you for your attention to this request.

Sincegy, J
