Dear Dr. Weiss,

The Armed Forces Radiobiology Research Institute (AFRRI) operates a research reactor under USNRC license number R-84.

The Department of Defense has directed that AFRRI be closed and begin the nuclear reactor shutdown in FY 1997.

The reactor staff is currently preparing the necessary briefing papers to demonstrate the time and funding necessary to i

accomplish reactor decommissioning.

AFRRI will notify the NRC and submit the necessary requests and plans for approval in accordance with Federal Regulations.and NRC guidelines.
