Dear Chairman Selin:

I am writing to formally request an investigation by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) into the accident that occurred on Interstate 91 in Springfield, Massachusetts, on December 16, 1991, in which a vehicle transporting radioactive uraniur dioxide pellets from Wilmington, Delaware, to the Vermont Yankee nuclear power plant in Vernon, Vermont, was completely destroyed.

While there was no apparent release of radiation from the collision, the accident did raise serious concerns about the transportation of radiocative nuclear materials on our nation's highways. Furthermore, the accident cephasizes the need for a re-examination of the advance notification policy for vehicles carrying nuclear cargo on public roadways.

The frequcncy with which radioactive nuclear material is transported on our nation's roads is increasing each year.

Therefore, in an effort to prevent this type of accident from happening again, I urge you to initiate an investigation into the cause of the accident, and what implications it will have on future transportation of radioactive nuclear materials. I look forward to your response.

Sincerely, 6
