T M Parker, Northern States Power Company, to U S Nuclear Regulatory Commission, dated June 27, 1991 titled: " Response Update to NRC Ceneric Letter 89 13 Service Water System Problems Affecting Safety Related Equipment" The purpose of this letter is to provide information regarding the status of activities taken by NSP in accordance with the Generic Letter.
In Reference 2, we committed to completion of a study of the effectiveness of our blocide program for the service water system by July 1, 1991.
Ee,uipment problems in our new biocide feed system necessitated modifications to the system and a repeat of a test to complete the study (Reference 3).
We have completed the study.
Biological testing indicated that the curcent biocide levels provide adequate control. We are presently utili::Ing the sodium l
hypochlorite/ sodium bromide system for biological control. We will continue to monitor effectiveness by periodic sampling at the remote points of the system. The sampling will involve testing for chemical levels as well as the use of bloslides to monitor biological growth. All sampling and monitoring will be documented.

l USNRC Northern States Power Company Page 2 of 2 January 28, 1992 Also, in Reference 2, we discussed planned inspections of accessible interior surfaces.
In the discussion, we committed to cicaning execssive accumulatione when discovered during these inspections. Additionally, we said that we would develop methods for mechanically cleaning the interior surfaces of piping.
Based on our success with chernical cleaning methods, we have changed our plans and presently intend to use chernical cleaning rather than :nechanical cleantog when there is excessive accumulation.
We now affirm that all initial tests and activities which we commit ted to in the referenced letters, with the exception of the development of inochnnical cleaning rnethods as discussed above, have been completed and t. hat continuing programs have been established.
