Mr. ' Ibm Ippolito Division of Licensing Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation United States Nuclear Regulatory Comission I

Dear Mr. Ippolito:

l l

'Ihis will confirm our discussion regarding CPSES Fire Dampers on May 24, 1984.

Our pre-operational test indicate some problems with assured fire damper closure under certain conditions.

We have reported this issue to NRC REG.IV as a potentially reportable deficiency under 10CRF50.55(e).

As I pointed out, this type damper behavior cnuld not have gone undetected.

Further, each case will need to be examined to determine safety impact and reportability.

We are proceeding with a rigorous review of alternatives to get the best l

solution of this issue and will provide you with a presentation of

}

the results as soon as possible.

Your attention to this matter will be appreciated.

Sincerel yours,
