_ CERTIFIED MAIL RETURN RECEIPT REQUESTED Mr. R. Bradley Chewning, P.E.

Regional Director State Water Control Board Val. ley Regional Office 116 North Main Street P. O. Box 268 Bridgewater, Virginia 22812 North Anna Power Station - Oil Spill - May 18, 1984

Dear Mr. Chewning:

This is to confirm the oil spill that occurred on May 18, 1984 at our North Anna Power Station. This spill was reported by telephone to your office and the National Response Center on the same day.

At approximately 2:20 p.m. on May 18, 1984, station personnel discovered that a small amount of oil had been discharged from either a storm drain or the oil separator system into the discharge canal. The oil was contained by a permanently located boom and cleanup efforts were initiated inmediately upon discovery. No oil was observed af ter removal from the water surface with adsorbent material.

The exact source of the oil could not be ascertained. All levels in the oil separator were normal and it is known to be functioning properly. The quantity of oil discharged though not measurable was thought to be quite small and no additional discharge has been observed. Surveillance of the area will be maintained.

Station biological personnel assisted in the cleanup effort. These personnel did not observe any adverse environmental impact do fish or other aquatic biota as a result of this spill. Tney will continue to observe the area auring the next few days.

If you have any questions regaWding this matter, please let me know.

Very truly yours, 7%
