Subject:
Braidwood Station Units 1 and 2 Steam Generator Baseline Inspection 1
NRC Docket Nos. 50-456/457
Dear Mr. Denton:
This is to inform the NRC of our intent to utilize the enclosed ASME Code Case N-401 in the baseline eddy current examination of the Braidwood Units 1 and 2 steam generator tubes.
NRC plant-specific approval of our use of this Code Case is required because it was only recently approved and has not yet been included in Regulatory Guide 1.84.
Paragraph V.6.1.I-21(e) of the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code requires recording of eddy current data on magnetic tape and strip charts.
For the Braidwood Units 1 and 2 steam generator examinations, we will be using the Zetec MIZ-18 eddy current instrumentation which records digitized data on magnetic tape.
This system is considered to be superior and allows for more accurate rccarding of the data taken.
The Main Committee of the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Committee passed this Code Case on November 4, 1983 which was subsequently approved by the ASME Council.
In Code Case N-401, the ASME has approved the use of this type of the data recording.
We expect to begin eddy current examinations within the near future and prompt NRC review of this matter is therefore requested.
We are confident that the NRC will approve the use of this Code Case for Braidwood Units 1 and 2, and we will proceed on that basis.
Please contact this office immediately if NRC approval appears unlikely.
l One signed original and fifteen. copies of this letter with Enclosure are provided for NRC review.

y ENCLOSURE Case N-401 ISI 83-28 Eddy Current Examination - Recording Data Section XI, Division 1 Inquiry:
Is it permissible, as an alternative to Appendix IV of Section XI, which requires magnetic tape and strip chart recording of eddy current test data, to use digitized collection and storage of data as the permanent record for eddy current examinations?
Reply:
It is the opinion of the Committee that, when-demonstrated equivalent to the ANII, digitized collection and storage of eddy current test data may be used as an alternative to magnetic tape and strip chart recording of eddy current test data required by Appendix IV of Section XI.
