, Mr. William J. Dircks Q 329,-330 Executive Director for Operations Nuclear Regulatory Commission Maryland National Bank Building 7735 Old Georgetown Road Sethesda, MD 20555

Dear Mr. Dircks:

It is my understanding at the meeting held in Washington on April 27, 1984, between Consumers Power Company and the NRC, that interveners specifically GAP, Lone Tree Council, Mary Sinclair and a representative of Barbara Stamiris, were present to express their continued opposition to this project. I further understand some of them spoke as "repre-senting the community".

I wos unaware that they could be present. Do individuals who support the project have as much right to be present and could they attend meetings in the future?

I ask this because these four groups and individuals named above, {

certainly do not represent any significant part of the population in i i

Hidland or Midland County, GAP is an outside group financed from other sources with no support of l any depth in the community.

The Lone Tree Council has a very small group of supporters.

Mrs. Sinclair and Mrs. Stamiris are veterans at this activity. I i

believe they have called attention to some genuine safety concerns in the past, but-these are in the process of being corrected. Tneir concerns about safety are extreme. Their statements on economics; short range and inaccurate.

They do not, I repeat do not, have a broad base of support within this community or within this county. The numbers in support of the plant far far exceed the vocal few who are opposed to it. Most of recognize the need for this plant and want it.

I am addressing an original of this letter to Mr. Nunzio Palladino, Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

Sincerely, w'

William J. B WJB/j p '
