Dear Mr. Keppler:
Reference:
Fermi 2 NRC Docket No. 50-341
Subject:
Interim Report of 10CFR50.55(e) Item 129
" Lack of Design Calculations for HVAC Duct Supports" On June 14, 1984, De troit Edison's Mr.
L.
P.
- Bregni, Engineering-Licensing, telephoned Mr.
R.
C.
Knop of NRC Region III to report a potential deficiency concerning missing design calculations for safety-related HVAC system ductwork supports.
Description of Deficiency During the Reactor Building "as-built" structural loading assessment, Detroit Edison discovered that the design calculations for safety-related ductwork supports were missing.
Safety-related ductwork design, fabrication and installation was contracted by Detroit Edison to the Robert Irsay Company of Chicago, Illinois.
Seismic qualification design for the ductwork and structural design for the supports was done for Irsay by the Fluor-Pioneer Company, an Architect / Engineer firm from Chicago, Illinois.
Detroit Edison has been advised by Fluor-Pioneer that detailed design calculations were made for the HVAC system ductwork and supports.
Detroit Edison has found at least one HVAC support design that does not meet the rigid support assumption used in the ductwork seismic analysis.
This finding makes the seismic qualification of the safety-related HVAC system indeter-minate at this time.

Analysis of Safety Implications The HVAC system supports could fail during a seismic event resulting in the loss -or impaired opera tion of safety-related - liVAC systems.'
Corrective Action To resolve this issue, Detroit Edison will reanalyze the affected safety-related.HVAC ductwork supports.
This analysis will assure the structural adequacy of the ductwork.
The results of this reanalysis will be included. In the final report on this item.
Another. report on this item,-either interim or final, will-be sent to you when further information is available.- If
-you have questions concerning this matter, please contact l
