S. NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION Washington, D. C.

20555 Attention:

Mr.

J. M. Taylor, Deputy Director Office of Inspection and Enforcement Gentlemen:

GENERIC LETTER 84-01 USE OF THE TERMS "IMPORTANT TO SAFETY" AND " SAFETY RELATED" Generic Letter 84-01 dated January 5, 1984 acknowledged the recently expressed concerns of the nuclear industry with the NRC ste!f's use of the terms "important to safety" and " safety related".

Wisconsin Electric has been concerned for sometime with the application of these definitions and would welcome the opportunity to discuss this subject.

We have participated in discussions with the Atomic Industrial Forum's Subcommittee on Safety Classification on this topic.

Participation in such discussions of the quality assurance-related aspects of the safety classification issue does not constitute an endorsement of the NRC's recent definition of the terms " safety related" versus "important to safety".

We still consider the issue of the widespread use of those terms in the NRC regulations to be unresolved.

Please advise us of your schedule for any meeting you intend to hold on this issue.

Very trul~y yours, lC J

Vice Presi ent Nuclear Power C. W.
