30 Churchill Avenue, Apt. 610 Cambridge, MA, 02140 General Comment My understanding of the purpose of an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) is to determine the consequences of the project for our natural environment, and those who depend upon it for their livelihood.

The Phase I storage of 500 canisters of high-level radioactive spent fuel above-ground in New Mexico would imperil the population of the entire Southwestern United States. Many of the people living in this part of the U.S.A. are descendants of the original inhabitants. The valleys, mountains, rivers, lakes, trees, grasses, wildflowers and fauna are extraordinarily sacred to them. Being part of the heritage shared with their ancestors for centuries, these lands signify their very identity and presence here on earth.

Whether shipped from other parts of the country by armored trucks or armored trains, the possibility of an accident is a threat to the many natural areas and inhabitants along the way. What would remain after an accident would be total devastation of sacred homelands and homes rendered uninhabitable forever.
