This is to provide additional inforaation regarding the design of Category I masonry walls at Byron and Braidwood stations. This cumpletes the transmittal of information requested in reference (a). In reference (b) Commonwealth Edison indicated that safety-related masonry walls at Byron would be surveyed for the presence of structural cracks. That work nas now been ccmpleted. The enclosed .rcport identities all the structural cracks and explains why these cracks do not compromise the structural integrity of the walls. 1. 0 - Introduction This report covers the following additional information which was requested by the NRC during the telephone con-f erence call on July 1,1983.

The report identifies any structural cracks that exist in Byron Unit 1 & Unit 2 walls with an explanation of their effect on the wall design. 2.0 Effect of Cracks on Design of Concrete Masonry Wa1.ls All safety-related masonry walls at the Byron Station have l been surveyed. Of 458 walls surveyed, 13 walls have struc-tural cracks. Design Impact of the Crack j 1. Cracks at Lintels 4A-19A Expected crack at the joint or [ 6A-11 in the block at the Lintel does not affect the structural integrity 4 of the walls. iL 2. Vertical cracks 2A-04 A vertical crack at a support lo- [ at support locations SA-68A cation (building column or masonry 0 8A-28 wall columns) does not affect the U structural integrity of the con-crete masonry wall since the wall l-is assumed to span horizontally and the crack is located at the theoretical hinge point of a simply-supported span. l 3. Horizontal non-thru 2A-08 The structural integrity of con-cracks in the mortar 2A-40A crete masonry walls is not affected by horisental non-thru cracks in n the mortar since the walls are designed to span horizontally. 4.
