Dear Mr. Bixby:

As you're aware from the January 26, 1984 neeting at the NRC with the Transamerica Delaval Diesel Generators owners Group, the NRC is concernec about the reliability of the diesel generators supplied by Transarerica for use in nuclear power plants. We were pleased with the offer you made to cooperate with both the HRC and Owners Group in resolving this matter ir order to regain confidence in the reliability of these engines.

Further infomation is needed by the NRC to more clearly define the safety issues and to detemine the adequacy of any remediel action required to i

protect the public health and safety. Specifically, I am requesting the following infomation regarding all Transamerica diesel engines either identical or similar to TDI models DSRV 12, DSRV 16, DSRV 20, and DSR 48 which have been ordered for either nuclear or non-nuclear application:

1.

Name and address of purchasers of each engine, and dates of purchase and delivery; 2.

Location and intended use of each engine; 3.

Design and manufacturing problems identified by TDT and or users; 4

Perfomance histories of each engine indicating any defect or concern which has been identified in the field which could impact operchility of any engine; and 5.

Any remedial action taken to address items (3) and (A) above, lie would appreciate making this infonnation available within 30 days.
