RE: North Anna Power Station - Oil Spill - February 14, 1984 l

Dear Hr. Chewning:

This is to confirm the oil spill that occurred on February 14, 1984 at our North Anna Power Station. This spill was reported by telephone to your office and the National Response Center on the same day.

At approximately 9:10 A.M. on February 14, 1984, station personnel discovered that a small amount of oil had entered Lake Anna near the cooling water intake structure.

Immediately following discovery of the spill, cleanup efforts began. A containment boom was placed around the small sheen near the intake structure and the oil was removed from the lake surface with adsorbent material. No oil was observed at the containment boom permanently deployed across the cooling water discharge canal, and it was felt by station personnel that the spill was either contained at the observed area near the intake structure, or dispersed naturally during entrainment.

The source of the oil was found to be the drive chain lubricant reservoir for one of the Unit Two intake screens. One of the welds on the reservoir had developed a crack, and a small amount of lubricating oil had dripped out. The oil was washed from the intake structure deck to the lake by heavy rains. The exact quantity of oil that entered the lake is unknown, but was felt to be quite small.

To prevent a recurrence of this type of spill, the crack in the lubricating reservoir was repaired.

Station biological personnel assisted in the cleanup effort. These personnel did not observe any adverse environmental Impact to fish or other aquatic biota as a result of this spill, and will maintain a close surveillance of the spill area during the next few days.
