Dear Sir:

Clarification 1 to NUREG-0737 Item II.E.4.1 states that an acceptable alternative to providing dedicated hydrogen penetrations is a combined design that is single-failure proof for operation of the purge system.

The James A.

PitZPatrick Nuclear Power Plaat design incorporates a Containment Atmosphere Dilution (CAD) System which provides for control of postulated combustible gases following a Design Basis Event (DBE).

The CAD System is incorporated in a combined design with tne Drywell and Suppression Chamber Incrting and Purge System, and all purging is via the Standby Gas Treatment System.

To insure the capability for purge initiation without requiring operator entry into the Reactor Building and to eliasinate concern about a single failuce while purging, a piping and valve modification was proposed in Reference 1.

This modification was completed during the 1981-1982 refueling outage with the exception of providing a source of Class IE redundant power to two motor operated valves which was originally not available.

Arrangements are being made to obtain a motor control center which will provide Class IE power for both-this item and for

. Appendix R applications.

This motor-control center is scheduled for installation prior to July 1, 1985.
