Dear Sir:

Three Mile Island Nuclear Station, Unit 1 (TMI-1) f Operating License No. DPR-50 Docket No. 50-289 Inadequate Core Cooling (NUREG 0737 II.F.2)

By letter dated June 14, 1983 the NRC provided conceptual design approval of our proposed RCS Inventory Trending System. The NRC further identified several concerns and requested a schedule for providing the requested information. By letter dated August 25, 1983 GPUN provided responser to the short term items and agreed to provide the responses to the remaining questions in the detailed design description. The attached response to some of the questions and the intermediate system design description provide partial fulfillment of this requirement and the first milestone (namely the detail design description) discussed in our response of March 10, 1983.

The enclosure entitled "RCS Coolant Inventory Trending (CIT) with RC Pumps Operating" provides the method for developing void fraction for various RCS pump configurations based on motor current. GPUN intends to use pump power which is directly related to current as the input parameter.

GPUN has now contracted with a vendor for the more detailed design phase and will submit a final design package in June, 1984. GPUN has installed a tap in the DHR dropline, engineered a tie-in to the RV head vent and developed the software for the RCS void fraction calculation.
