Mr. A. Giambusco Febru ry 23,1975 O C) >c= > 2 Description of Deviation: -

The following chmical usage exceeded 2 times the estimated yearly usage which is an Ehvironmental Deivation.

Chemical Annual Usage Tech Spec Limit s (2 x est. usage)

Alum 61,000 lbs. h0,000 lbs.

Sodium Hydmxide 381,h10 lbs. 3h0,000 lbs.

Sodium Sulfite 1,200 lbs. 1,000 lbs.

' Designation of Apparent Cause of Deviations

. The high usage of alum and sodium hydroxidt resulted from .

the large dein water requirments of the preoperational flush program.

The high sodium sulfite usage is a result of the poor auxilia:y boiler deaerator perfomance and design probles in the condensate return syste (which requires large makeup with air saturated water). Both of these pmb1ms require additional sodium sulfite injection to cont ml dissolved 02 in the. auxiliary boilers.

Analysis of Deviation:

No safety implications. ' No adverse offcets ,to the .Conowingo Pond have- been observed rhia t.n +M . ovaarriv arrge.

Corrective Action:

The alum . nd sodium hydroxide usage will decrease since the flushing pmgran is over and danand for dmin water has decreased.

Modifications to the condensate retum syste planned for the spring is expected to reduce sodium sulphite usage.

Failure Data:

None.
