. 1 Attachment to MFN No.107-95 Responses to Open Items identified in May 24,1995 NRC letter:  !

REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION (RAI) CONCERNING SIMPLIFIED BOILING WATER REACTOR l SYSTEMS INTEGRAL TESTING IN GIRAFFE J

I 900.100 Will any additional instrumentation be installed in GIRAFFE for the SIT? Does adequate instrumentation exist (or will it be added) to be able to measure water levels in the dowmcomer and in the " core / chimney" region of the vessel? What will be the sampling rate ofinstruments during these transients? GE also should define the " critical instrumentation" for each test.

RESPONSE TO 900.I00 (A)

A. This part of the response addresses additional instrumentation (except for water level, see B below), which was not covered in the original response to this RAI (MFN 093-95, i dated 6/23/95).

Most of the added instmmentation results because of the addition of a separate IC J (isolation condenser) unit for the SIT tests. The following instrumentation is provided for this unit:

- fluid temperature in the steam and water box and inside one tube a steam supply line flow steam box pressure water levels in the IC pool, the IC unit tube and the water box I

RESPONSE TO 900.100 (B)

B. This pah of the response addresses the adequacy of the water level instrumentation which was not covered in the original response to this RAI (MFN 093-95, dated 6/23/95).

The water level instrumentation is adequate to meet the objectives of the GIRAFFFJSIT test series. There are pressure taps inside the chimney at elevations of 0.5,2.6,3.7,4.8, and 7.0 m above the top of the heated section of the heater rods. These measurements were not taken in Helium Series testing. Delta P measurements between these taps indicate collapsed water level. The lowest of these measurements corresponds to l approximately the top of the upper core plate. If the water level drops to the top core plate the pertinent water level becomes the bypass level. Pressure taps are located at the top and bottom of the bypass to provide a delta P measurement. These measurements were not taken in the He test series. If the water level drops into the heater section it will be recorded by increased temperature in the heater rods and the test will be terminated.

Pressure taps are also located in the downcomer near the bottom of the RPV, near the top of the heaters and near the top of the chimney.

These instruments will provide an indication of collapsed water level in the chimney at i several elevations, collapsed level in the bypass and collapsed level in the downcomer. In l addition the taps in thichimney will indicate at what time the two-phase level crosses the elevation of the taps in the chimney. The lowest pressure tap i.n the chimney is l approximately 0.5 m above the top of the active heater section. This is about im below the expected lowest calculated two-phase level in the SBWR. These measurements will provide an adequate indication of water level in GIRAFFE / SIT for TRACG qualification. l 1
