w Gentlemen:

1 We wish to inform you that we have completed the wall thickness T

verification program for the valves in the reactor coolant pressure bound-ary at Vermont Yankee. The results of this verification program may be t

summarized briefly as follows:

7 M

The wall thicknesses of eighty-two (82) valves were ultra-sonically measured and the measurements indicated that core 7

shift had not occurred in any of these valves.

However, ultrasonic neasurements of six (6) valves indicated areas of the valve wall which were below the requirements of Code

'E ANSI B 16.$.

Five ($) of these valves were found to be ac-ceptable under the provision of Reference (b) which allows C

a reduction in the wall thickness if the mechanical proper-5 ties of the meterial exceed the specification minimum by an amount, sufficient to compensate for the measured reduction F

in wall thickness. The remaining valve was accepted after E

an engineering evaluation indicated that the uall thickness A

was adequate for the service conditions and, if ordered today, would exceed the requirements of ASME Section III.

J._

e Engineering review of the documentation package for the valve g

verification program was completed by Yankee nuclear Servicca Division on December 1, 1972 and was foraarded to the plant site on December Ib, 1972.

Very truly yours, 9401170086 730206
