Dear Mr. Doyd:
Subject:
Environmental Deviation The following deviation was reported to Mr. Walt Baunack, Of fice of Inspection and Enforcement, Region 1, United States Nuclear Regulatory Conmission on October 30, 1975
Reference:
License Number DPR-44/56 Environmental Technical Specifications:
Section 2.2.2 Report No.:
50-277/278-75-25 Report Date:
November 7,1975 Deviation Date: October 30, 1975 Facility:
Peach Dottom Atomic Power Station Units 2 and 3 R.D. 1, Del ta, Pennsylvani a 17314
_!_dentification of Deviation:
Sewage plant ef fluent suspended solids in excess of the Environmental Technical Specification limit.
Description of Deviation:
A routine turbidity measurement of the effluent from the sewage plant disclosed a value of approximately 16 JTU's, which exceeded the action level for further investigation. A gravimetric ane'ysis of this sample showed that the effluent suspended solids concentt ocion was 50 ppm greater than that of the riverwater.
Designation of Apparent Cause of Deviation:
An investigation showed that the sludge return pump was plugged.
This allowed an excessive amount of sludge to build up and carry over in the offluents.

S J 77/278-75-25 November 7,1975 Page 2 Analysis of Deviation:
Because of the short period of time that the sewage plant effluent was out of specification and the high river flow at the time, no detrimental ef fects to the environment are anticipated.
Corrective Action:
The sludge return pump was cleared and returned to service.
The settling basin and chlorine contact tanks were cleaned. A follow-up sample was taken approximately four hours af ter the initial sampic and revealed that the effluent suspended solids concentration was within Environmental Technical Specification limits.
Failure Data:
Environmental Deviation Report 50-277/278-74-9; 50-277/278-74-10.
Very truly yours,
