Dear Mr. O'Reilly:
Subject:
Environmental Deviation The following deviation was reported to Mr. Walt Baunack, Office of Inspection and Enforcement, Region 1, United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission on January 12, 1976.
Reference : License Number DPR-44/56 Environmental Technical Specifications:
2.2.2 Report No.:
50-277/278-76-4 Report Date:
January 22, 1976 Deviation Date: January 12, 1976 Facility:
Peach Bottom Atomic Power Station Units 2 & 3 R.D. #1, Delta, Pennsylvania 17314 Identification of Deviation:
Sewage plant effluent suspended solids in excess of the Environmental Technical Specification limit.
Description of Deviation:
Routine gravimetric analysis showed that the suspended solids concentration of the sewage plant effluent was 53 ppm greater than that of the riverwater.
Designation of Apparent Cause of Deviation:
An investigation showed that solids had been carried over fron the settling zone into the chlorine contact tank due to inadequate sludge return and from the chlorine contact tank to the effluent due to high flow.

January 22, 1976 Page Analysis of Deviation:
Because the sewage plant effluent is diluted by a factor of approximately 100,000 with circulating water flow, the environmental impact of this deviation is minimal.
Corrective Action:
The chlorine contact tank was pumped out, removing most of the suspended solids which had been carried over from the settling zone. The sludge return flow was increased. A follow-up sample taken on January 14, 1976 revealed that the effluent suspended solies concentration was withir.
Environmental Technical Specification limits. The Philadelphia Electric Company Engineering Department is inuestigating, the Environmental Deviation.
Failure Data:
