Dear Mr. Stello:

Subject:

Envi ronmental Deviation The following deviation was reported to Mr. Harvey Cantor, Office of Inspection and Enforcement, Region 1, United States Nuclear i

Februa ry 18, 1976 Faci li ty:

Peach Bottom Atomic Power Station Units 2 and 3 R.D. #1, Delta, Pennsylvania 17314 Identification of Deviation:

Settling basin effluent suspended solids in excess of the Envi ronmental Technical Speci fication limi t.

Description of Deviation:

Routine analysis showed that the suspended solids concen-tration of the settling basin effluent was 45 ppm greater than that of the river water.

Designation of Apparent Cause of Deviations.

High suspended solidst levels in the river water resulted in a build-up of solids in the settling basin and also necessitated high blowdown flows from the raw water clarifier. This combination resulted in carry-over in the effluent from the settling basin.

l Analysis of Deviation:

l Due to the short period of time that the settling basin effluent was out of speci fication, dilution wi th ci rculating water i

flow, and high river flow (greater than 100,000 cfs), the envi ron-mental impact of this deviation is minimal.

Corrective Action:

The clarifier blovdown was terminated.

The settling basin contents were allowed to settle, and the solids pumped out.

Normal operations were then resumed.

Failure Data:
