Director Division of Operating Reactors Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulations United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, DC 20555

Dear Mr. Stello:

Subject:

Environmental Deviation The following deviation was reported to Mr. Walt Baunack, Office of Inspection and Enforcement, Region 1, United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission on June 8, 1976.

Reference:

License Number DPR-44/556' Appendix B .. ,

Environmental Technical Specifications Section 2.2.2 Report No.: 50-277/278-76-28 Report Date: June 17, 1976 Deviation Date: June 7, 1976 Facility: Peach Bottom Atomic Power Station Units 2 and 3 R.D. #1, Delta, PA 17314 Identification of Deviation:

Sewage plant effluent suspended solids were in excess of the Environmental Technical Specification limit.

Description of Deviation:

Routine gravimetric analysis showed that the suspended solids concentration of the sewage plant effluent was 88 ppm greater than that of the river water.

e Mr. Victor St o, Jr. 50-277/278-76-28 June 17, 1976 Page 2 Designation of Apparent Cause of Deviation:

Inoperability of the sludge return pump resulted in a carryover o'f sludge from the settling zone to the chlorine contact tank and discharge to the effluent upon increased flow.

Analysis of Deviation:

The sewage plant effluent suspended solids concentration was below the Technical Specification limit within 4 hours4.62963e-5 days
0.00111 hours
6.613757e-6 weeks
1.522e-6 months
.

Because of the large dilution factor for the sewage plant effluent from the circulating water flow and due to the short period of time the effluent was above the Environmental Technical Specification limit, the environmental impact of this deviation is minimal.

Corrective Action:

Sludge was removed from the chlorine contact tank.

The sludge return pump was returned to service.

Failure Data:

Environmental Dev.iation Report 277/278-76-26.
