Mr. Victor Stello, Jr.

O O 50-277/278-77-2 January 19, 1977 Page 2 Description of Deviation _:

u, The daily turbidity measurement of the settling basin effluent was high and a gravimetric analysis for total suspended solids was run.

The net total suspended solids for the settling basin was 56 ppm greater than the river sample. Within four hours the settling basin effluent was back within Technical Specification limits.

Designatioa of Apparent Cause of Deviations bue to a buildup of suspended soli & in the clarifier, higher than normal blowdown rates had to be established. This excessive flow in combination with the solids from the clarifier caused solids build-up in the settling basin and carry-over into the effluent.

Analysis of Deviation:

Because the settling basin flow was being diluted by a f actor of approximately 2,000 with circulating water at the time, the suspended solids of the circulating water leaving the discharge canal was affected to a minor extent; therefore, the environmental impact was minimal.

Corrective Action:

The settling basin was immediately isolated. The solids were allowed to settle and normal operations were resumed when effluent qual-ity was within limits. The settling basin was pumped out to reduced solid inventory. The entire water demineralization system is under study, to find and eliminate sources of excess suspended solids.

Failure Data:
