Dear Sir:

As defined by Technical Specifications for the Vernont Yankee Nuclear Power Station, Section 6.7.B.d, we are reporting the following Abnornal Occurrence as A0-72-20.

During a management review of the General Plant Log, it was noted that at approximately 2005 on December 22 during normal plant operation, the HPCI inverter tripped, rendering the HPCI System inoperable. This inoperability of HPCI exceeds the Limiting Condition of Operation as defined by Section 3.5.E.1.a of Technical Specifications. The subject section requires the HPCI Systen to be operable whenever irradiated fuel is in the reactor vessel and the reactor pressure is greater than 150 psig. The reactor was operating at approximately 60% power at the time of this occurrence.

The inverter was immediately reset, and verified to be operable. This remedial action was completed in a time span which precluded the necessity of further action.

The Plant Operations Review Committee concluded that this was a spurious trip not directly related to operational conditions. Additionally, it was concluded that the alarm which continuously monitors the inverter and the monthly verification of HPCI operability were adequate surveillance measures to monitor this system and no further action is required.
