Extension of the First Ten Year Inspection Interval for the Inservice Inspection Program Byron Nuclear Power Station, Unit 1 NPF-37: NRC Docket No. 50-454 Gentlemen:
Byron Station performs inservice inspections in accordance with Section XI of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code (ASME Code) as required by Title 10, Code of Federal Regulations, Part 50, Section 55a, Paragraph g, Subparagraph 3 [10 CFR 50.55a(g)(3)]. The Byron Unit 1 Inservice Inspection (ISI) Program for the First Ten Year Inspection Interval is being performed to the requirements of Section XI of the 1983 Edition of the ASME Code through the Summer 1983 Addenda. The First Ten Year Inspection Interval for the Byron Unit 1 ISI Program began September 16,1985, the date the unit was placed into commercial service, and is currently scheduled to end September 15, 1995.
The Byron Unit 1 Cycle 7 Refuel Outage (BIR07) is scheduled as the last outage of the Third Period of the First Ten Year Inspection Interval for the Byron Unit 1 ISI Program. BIR07 is currently scheduled to begin on March 29,1996. ASME Code,Section XI, Paragraph IWA - 2400(c) allows inspection intervals to be decreased or extended by as much as one year. Byron Station is invoking this paragraph to extend the First Ten Year Inspection Interval for the Byron Unit 1 ISI Program from its current end date of September 15,1995 to a new end date of June 30,1996. The Second Ten Year Inspection Interval for the Byron Unit 1 ISI Program will begin July 1,1996.
