Dear Mr. Denton:
This letter is in response to the above referenced letter from Mr. S. A. Varga of your staff.
Mr. Varga's letter addressed the NRC Safety Evaluation Report (SER) on the Masonry Wall Design evaluation which was performed in accordance with the NRC IE Bulletin 80-11.
The SER found that the evaluation and modifications of the Masonry Walls performed by Indiana & Michigan Electric Company are acceptable with the exception of five walls (i.e., 12-4031-Wl, 1-4033-W2,-W3 and 2-4036-W2, W3).
These five walls used joint reinforcement.
We will modify the five walls. The method of modification will be similar to the earlier modifications, which involved the addition of structural steel reinforcement sections. Our review indicates that, with consideration of the wall modifications, the maximum calculated tensile stress in mortar will not exceed the allowable tensile stress.
These modifications will be completed at the Donald C. Cook Nucler.:
Plant during the February to April, 1984 refueling outage.
