1) Spent fuel in currently stored in the opent fuel pool which han a 20 yr. enpacity. No additional action in currently being planned.
2) It in expected that the curtont practice will be changed.
3) No determination han been made at this timo, although it is thought that the solution could be a combination of choicon A, C and D.

L It has not been dotormined if the described 4) techniques will be adequate for continued at-reactor storage of spent fuel for the operating lifetime of the plant including a 20 year period of license renewal. ,

i S) No, wo do not anticipate the acquinition of additional land foi the otorage of opent fuel.

6) Yes, it is anticipated that there will be como additional construction activity on-site asnociated with the continued at-reactoi ntorage of spent fuel for the operating li fetime of the plant, including a 20 year period of license renewal.
7) It depends on what technique is used for future storage, ban 9d on using abovo ground dry ntorage, a facility would have to be constructed.

B, how-Level Radioactive Waste Management. Questions: f

1. Assuming a licenne renewal period of 20 years, our  !

renewal pariod for Callaway would extend from 2024 - 2044. The current schedulo for the first Midwont Compact Low-hovel Radioactivo Wanto l Disposal Facility in Michigan calls for operation to begin by 1/1/96. The Midwoot Compact calin for operation of a disposal facility for a period of  !

20 years after which the responnibility rotates to another state within the compact. Since the callaway 11conne tonewal period falls within operation of the cocond and third facilition, i i

there is sufficient time to assure thone facilition are sized with sufficient capacity for disposal of Callaway wanton.

2. There vill be only one site within the Compact at l any given time and under current compact ,

restrictions it will bo impossible to ship wastes for disposal in another Compact. Thoroforo, if we are denied acenna to the Midwont Compact Dinponni Facility, we would havo no choice but to store waston on-nito until the nituation vno corrected.  ;

3. .Annwer to be provided later.

i

4. Answer to be provided later.
5. Union-Electric owns approximately 7000~acros currounding the Callaway Plant. About 600 of the ,

total is currently uend for power genotation facilition. Given the amount of land still avsilable for uno, UE does not anticipate-tho-nood to acquire adelitional land for LLRW atorago.

6. Not Appitcabin.
7. Yes, ,
8. Por the LLRW Policy Amendments Act of 1905, the Callaway Plant will be denied-access to exiating cited facilition on 1/1/93. This action will require us to store LLRW at the site at-leant until 1/1/96.._We have_ sufficient chielded storage space in our Radwanto Buildin_a for the more highly ,

-activo LLRW nut;will require conntruction of additional f aci13 tios for the- low active wanton ruch an DAW, We expect to either modify an existing structure on site or build an additional prefabricated type building to moot our noodn.

Addi t i ont.1 stru nures would be cone ructed if the need-'arono to replace major plant equipment auch as Steam Generators,

1) No post-licensing modificationn and/or changes in  ;

intake or discharge systemn that may have altered  ;

the effects of the power plant on aquatic i

resources have taken place.

2) Although Callaway Plant has experienced violations ,

of the NPDES permit during operation, there han been no impact on aquatic resources due to the ,

~

nature of the violations and the type of receiving body of water (Mianouri River). No enforcement actiona have occurred concerning thin innue cince Callaway received an operating license in 1984. i

3) No water quality.parametern have been determined '

to have a significant impact on the environment.

On November 22, 1985, the Callaway NPDES Permit +

was reiosued. At that time the maan effluent limit requirements were deleted from all outfalls. '

In a current NPDES permit renewal, we are f requesting that a portion of the radiological effluent requirements be removed since no ,

correlation has been observed from callaway Plant effluents and various envitanmental samples. Thin ,

particular monitoring requirement is covered by <

the NRC. -f t

4) Due to the type of plant and amount of liquid '

effluents released from the Callaway Plant, the

'only iguatic resources rnonitoring that in done in the radioloical monitoring. As noted in question tt 2, the data indicates no correlation due to-liquid effluents. No other site specific monitoring is required' by federal or state agencies.

5) The attached Tablen 4.4 and 5.4 show entrainment 1 and impingement results respectively, and l summarizes the types and numbers of organisms '

entrained and impinged. Entrainment of - fi sh eggs and larvae begins in the early_ spring and ends in 3 late summer. Impingement of fish was basically

  • confined = f rom the late all to the early opring neasons'with rates being the highest =during the- ,

winter, Our entrainment and-impingement studien-

.lanted for one year - and documented no signi ficant impacts; therefore, no study has been made on how entrainment and impingement has changed over time.

6) No changes to-the aquatic habitato (both  !

onhancement and (tegradation) i n the_ vicinity of  ;

the Callaway Plat.t have occurred since the t innuance of the operating licence including those [

that may havo resulted in different plant irrpac ts  :

than those initially predicted.

7) There han been no impact on the uno of aquatic  !

resourcen including constrained activity on commercial or recreationni fish harventn. ,

8) .The Missouri River has so many industrial effluent release points that it is difficult to determine  ;

what the relative contributions by percent of each nource would be.

9) A copy of Section 316 (b) in being provided,  ;

Section 316 (a) waa nct submitted because the Callaway Plant doen not have a Thermal Dinchargo.

Section 336 (b) determinations have been made by

-the regulatory authorition.
