BRANCH October 14, 1983 Hon. James K. Asselstine, Commissioner SERVED OCT '40h33 Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, DC 20555
Dear Commissioner Asselstine:
Carl Walske of the Atomic Industrial Forum told
~
me thatJyou were present during a discussion he had with Commissioner Gilinsky concerning the experience level of operating personnel at the Shoreham plant.
Commissioner Gilinsky visited the plant several weeks ago and his impressions probably reflect the organization as we discussed it at that time.
Since Commissioner Gilinsky's visit, we have decided to drop the system of " advisors" to each operating shift as we had earlier agreed with NRC staff.
Instead, we will hire, as permanent company employees, experienced BWR operators who will fill a supervisory slot on each shift.
I'm confident Commissioner Gilinsky couldn't have known of the change, since I had only notified Mr.
D. Eisenhut earlier this week.
In any event, because you were present at the discussion on October 13, I thought you should have the latest information on the subject.
Sincerely, CD, Wi ed O.
