Dear Mr. Knuth:

BROUNS FERRY NUCLEAR PLANT UNIT 3 - REPORTABLE DEFICIENCY -

AUXILIARY SWITCHES IN BREAKER COMPARTMENTS OPERATING IMPROPERLY Initial report of the subject reportable deficiency was made to B. J. Cochran, NRC-IE, Region II, on January 15, 1975.

In compliance with paragraph 50.55(c) of 10 CFR Part 50, this is submitted as an interim report.

The MH switch, located in the left-hand side of the 4-kV shutdown breaker compartments and operated by the breaker, is continuing past the closing point and opening the switch contacts. There is a total of 57 of these switches in unit 3 safety-related equipment. The General Electric representative has been informed, and he in turn has notified the GE design organization of the problem. We are now waiting to hear from GE design on their recommendations for corrective action. A final report will be submitted upon completion of the investigation.
