O ENCLOSURE RESPONSE TO D. B. VASSALLO'S LETTER TO H. G. PARRIS DATED JUNE 3, 1983 NUREG-0737, ITEM II.K.3.18, ADS LOGIC MODIFICATIONS BROWNS PERRY AND HARTSVILLE NUCLEAR PLANTS

(

Reference:

TVA letter from LT M. Mills to H. R. Denton l

dated April 4, 1981) 4 Browns Ferry TVA has participated in the BWR Owners' Group (BWROG) report which elaborated on various logic modifications to provide auto-initiation of the ADS for nondesign basis events. We agree with the general conclusions of the report in that the proposed changes can be accomplished with no loss of plant safety factor. We are also in agreement with the basic premise stated in the report that the existing system is quite adequate. This option of making no changes in ADS logic is more consistent with our general philosophy of operation and system design.

The above stated philosophy and practice was discussed in the referenced letter. Technical bases have also been previously 1

provided in the original BWROG submittal on this matter dated March 31, 1981.

Hartsville As a result of the deferral of Hartsville, TVA at this time chooses to defer its choice of option and, thus, also to defer mo'dification of the ADS logic system. This matter will be addressed after restart of design and construction.
