Quad-cities Station Unit 1 Jet Pump No. 7 Sensing Line Failure NRC Docket No. 50-254 Reference (a) : N. J. Kalivianakis letter to J. F. O' Leary dated July 12, 1974.

(d) : G. A. Abrell letter to D. L. Ziemann dated March 3, 1976.

Dear Mr. Stello:

Upon discovery of the failure of jet pump No. 7 at Quad-Cities Station Unit 1, the Station made plans to repair the jet pump sensing line during the 1976 outage. These intentions were communicated to the NRC by reference (a) and (b).

Upon investigation into possible repair techniques with General Electric, it became obvious that such a repair would be an extremely difficult one involving significant radiation exposure to personnel. Furthermore, the approaches considered offered a low probability of success for the sensing line repair on one hand and a significant possibility of damaging the other sensing lines on the other.

In view of this, no repair attempt was made during the current refueling outage. Methods for detecting jet pump failures l in the absence of jet pump flow indications have been developed.

Reference (c) requested a change to the Technical Specifications to eliminate jet pump flow indication from the requirements of the Technical Specifications.

Mf. Victor Stello, Jr. March 12,-1976 The methods developed were described in reference (d) as were the actions to date to find a repair procedure.

In view of the foregoing, present plans for repair of the jet pump sensing line are indefinite. Future plans will depend upon the acceptance of reference (c) and the integrity of the remaining jet pump sensing lines.

Very truly yours,

'^
