Vermont Yankee Feedwater Nozzle Integrity Evaluation

Dear Sir:

By Reference (b), we committed to performing a UT examination of our feedwater nozzle blend radius region and an analytically developed UT examination of the nozzle bore, during the 1983 refueling outage.

Reference (c) requested that we provide you with a post-outage report detailing the results of these NDT examinations. as well as thermal sleeve monitoring data up to the current refueling outage.

In response to your request, we are providing you with the following enclosures:

1) Inspection Program Summary - Nucl~ ear Energy Services, Inc.;
2) NDT Examination Procedure;
3) Data Sample;
4) Diagram of the Area of Coverage on the inner Radius and Bore of the Nozzle;
5) Leak Detection System Data - 1982;
6) Leak Detection System Date - 1983 (Up to 1983 Refueling Outage); and
7) Analysis of Feedwater Nozzles and Evaluation of Thermal Sleeve Data.

If necessary, the complete inspection related data pa.kage can be made available to you for review at our plant site.

Enclosure 7, which includes the analysis of the feedwater nozzles and evaluation of the thermal sleeve data, contains certain information which is considered proprietary to Vermont Yankee Nuclear Power Corporation. An affidavit attesting to its proprietary nature is provided as an attachment to this letter.

Heider, despose and say that I am the Vice President of Vermont Yankee Nuclear Power Corporation, duly authorized to make this affidavit, and have reviewed or caused to have reviewed the information which is identified as proprietary. I am submitting this affidavit in conformance with the provisions of 10CFR2.790 of the Commission's regulations far withholding this information.

The information for which proprietary treatment is sought is contained in to our letter, Vermont Yankee Nuclear Power Corporation to U.S.

Nuclear Regulatory Commission, dated May 26, 1983.

Pursuant to the provisions of Paragraph (b) (4) of Section 2.790 of the Commission's regulations, the following is furnished for consideration by the Commission in determining whether the information sought to be withheld f rom public disclosure, included in the above referenced document, should be withheld.

1. The material contained in this transmittal was obtained at considerable expense to Yankee Atomic Electric Company and Vermont Yankee Nuclear Power Corporation, and the release of which would seriously affect our competitive position.

2 The material contained in this transmittal is of the type customarily held in confidence and not customarily disclosed to the public.

3. This information is being transmitted to the Commission in confidence. Under the provisions of 10CFR2.790 with the understanding that it is to be received in confidence by the Commission.

4 This information is for Commission internal use only and should not be released to persons or organizations outside the Directorate of Regulation and the ACRS without prior approval of Yankee Atomic Electric Company. Should it become necessary to release this information to such persons as part of the review procedure, please contact Yankee Atomic Electric Company and they will make the necessary arrangements required to protect their proprietary interests.
