AT 757AM, DEC 16, 1972, WHILE AT COLD SHUTDOWN, THE #3 BATTERY CHARGERINPUT'TRANSFORMEROVERHEATEDANDASMALLFIREOCCURED IN THE TRANSFORMER WINDING INSULATION APPARENTLY AS A RESULT _ , y-t f 0F A SHORT CIRCUIT IN WINDING. THE #3 BATTERY CHARGER WAS ISOLATED, 3 THE FIRE EXTINGUISHED AND THE #3S BATTERY CHARGER WAS PLACED IN SERVICE.

THERE WERE NO SAFETY IMPLICATIONS UNDER THE CIRCUMSTANCES OF THIS OCCURENCE IN THAT THE r 1RE , WHICH WAS READILY EXTINGUISHED, WAS LIMITED TO THE IMMEDI ATE AREA 0F THE TRANSFORMER INSULATION AND THE REDUNDANI BATTERY CHARGER WAS OPERABLE. C HOWEVER, THERE ARE INDICATIONS THAT THE #3S AND #4 BATTERY CHARGER IMPUT TRANSFORMERS ARE OPERATING AT HIGHER THAN NORMAL TEMPERATURES -

WHICH IMPLIES THE PROBLEM MAY BE GENERIC IN NATURE.
