DESIG?!ATION OF APPARE.7 CAUSE OP OCCURRD:CE Thi ; 'ct cause for the starting failure of the Unit- 2 diesel generator cannot be determined at this time.

ANALYSIS OF OCCURRD*CE The Unit 2/3 diesel generator was available as a backup and could have provided the necessary e=crgency power for a safe chutdown if required. The health and safety of the public were not jeopardized by this occurrence.

CORRETIVE ACTION .

Ic:nediately followin6. the initial failure, several additional starts were performed.

The diesel failed to start one additional time. The next day the diesel was started six times in an attempt to duplicate the. failure; however, it started successfully each time. Q1 June 10, 1975 another test was conducted and the dicsel again started six times out of six attc= pts. At.approximately 0100 hours0.00116 days
0.0278 hours
1.653439e-4 weeks
3.805e-5 months
on June 11, 1975 the Unit-2 diesel failed to start twice in four attempts. A factory representative was called that morning to observe the start-ups. All six starts were successful.

Close surveillance of the diesel will be continued until the problcn can be pinpointed. 'w* hen the cause has been determined, suitable action will be taken and a follow-up letter will be submitted.

FAILURE DATA The Unit-2 diesel generator has had a series of recent starting failures of a similar nature. Previous failures occurred on April 15,1975 (Report No. 50-237/

1975-26) and en March 17, 1975 (R port No. 50-237/1975-16).

The diesel generator was manufactured by Electro-!~otive Division, General Motors Corporation. It is rated at 2500 k'.7, 4160 V and 900 RFM.

Sincerely, FP - z ~ ?i,sy.
