[External_Sender] Holtec purchase of Indian Point from Entergy I want to go on record as opposing the proposed sale of the Indian Point nuclear power plant to Holtec.
From all I hear, this company does not run a careful, well planned clean up operation at their nuclear power plant decommissioning job sites. They tend to cut corners, generating substantial cost over runs; expecting that someone else ( for example, the rate payers) will bail them out of any shortfall. This business plan is completely unacceptable.
Further, cleaning up Indian Point is not a run of the mill job. Unfortunately, the NRC allowed the construction and operation of a 42" diameter natural gas pipe line within about 150' (at the closest point) to the plant. Any failure of this pipeline near the plant would probably result in a catastrophic explosion, with potentially dire consequences for the entire region. Other questions concern the design, strength and durability of their fuel rod containment caskets. These units must be ready to contain the spent fuel rods on site, certainly for decades, or much longer; as after the abandonment of Yucca Mountain, no national spent nuclear fuel rod depository is even in the discussion stage.
There are several earthquake faults in the area, as well as the Hudson River, and most importantly; many thousands of immediate residential neighbors. Within a 50 mile radius, are the homes of well over 1 million more, plus the northern portion of NYC.
For the sake of all concerned, PLEASE do not approve Holtec as the contractor to dismantle the Indian Point nuclear reactors.
